To assess the climate impacts of land use, we model the response of ecosystem carbon to landscape change. By incorporating multiple land use sectors and natural disturbances, our modelling provides a comprehensive perspective of ecosystem carbon dynamics that can help prioritize management issues. To test potential solutions, simulations can assess a range of management strategies including afforestation, restoration, protection, conservation agriculture and densification.

Strategies a simulation can test

Afforestation

Establishing forest on land that was not previously forested.

Restoration

Returning developed or degraded land toward a natural state.

Protection

Constraining harvest and development within defined zones.

Conservation agriculture

Farming practices that retain carbon in agricultural soils.

Densification

Concentrating settlement growth rather than spreading it.
